Codeberg is a Berlin-based non-profit foundation running a community-owned, GDPR-compliant alternative to GitHub and GitLab. It hosts a Gitea instance on Hetzner infrastructure in Germany, offering free public and private repositories, issue tracking, pull requests, wikis, and a GitHub-compatible API. As a non-profit, Codeberg has no VC investors, no acquisition risk, and no commercial pressure to monetise user data. It is funded entirely by donations and membership fees. Codeberg is the preferred hosting platform for open-source projects that prioritise digital sovereignty, and it integrates natively with Woodpecker CI for automated pipelines. Migration from GitHub is supported via Codeberg's built-in import tool.
